Ship or Sheep? An Ear Test for English's Hardest Vowel

Korean, Japanese, and Spanish don't distinguish vowel length the way English does — a five-vowel system doesn't have a slot for "short i" next to "long e," so the ear has to build a new category from scratch, not just learn a new word.
