Sock or Shock? An S/SH Ear Test
sock
/sɒk/
shock
/ʃɒk/
Especially for Spanish speakers
Spanish has no native /ʃ/ sound at all — loanwords approximate it with ch or s — and Korean's closest sound only surfaces before certain vowels, not before the open back vowel in "shock," so outside that context it collapses to a plain s.
One extra puff of air at the front, otherwise identical. Let's see if your ear catches it.
